While Minnesota's governor's race isn't until next year... two states are choosing chief executives tomorrow... and the White House has a horse in both races.Karen Brown reports.New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine is shaking all the hands he can before Tuesday's election.In a race that's come down to the wire - President Obama has had the Democrat's back.Gov. Jon Corzine, D-NJ) says, 'to stand there and say that he thinks Corzine is best partner for him that is a strong message to our folks and that makes me feel good.President Obama made five appearances for Corzine... but Republican challenger Chris Christie expects to win.Christie says, 'Tuesday is accountability day.'Corzine recognizes President Obama's support is just one factor.Q: Do you think he has the clout to come in here and affect the election?Gov. Corzine says, 'i think he is an important element people will consider, but he is not the only element.'These off year races are important because they can shed light on how next year 's critical midterm contests will shape up.And fairly or not..They're often seen as a reflection on the president and his policies.Josh Kraushaar says, 'the white house political team has the NJ gubernatorial race at the top of their watch list and a defeat in a blue state like NJ would be very very damaging to them politically.'President Obama also campaigned for Virginia's Creigh Deeds.Candidate Obama carried Virginia in 2008.. but Deeds is trailing in the governor's race with independents turning away from the Democrat and breaking for Republican Bob McDonnell.Some voters say the President's visits don't change anything.Mary Connolly says, 'The president's backing someone has no effect on how i am going to vote.'When it comes to local issues.. many residents insist they're a better judge of the best candidate.
