Parents in New Ulm today are still questioning recent actions taken by the school district there.A couple of weeks ago, misbehavior at a volleyball game resulted in the suspensions of 40 New Ulm students, and forced a half dozen senior football players to miss their final game.There was an informational meeting held in New Ulm last night to discuss how the situation could have been handled differently.The big disagreement seems to stem from the blanket indictment of the entire student section at the game.With parents upset that the district appeared to be concentrating on fixing a bigger problem, rather than deal with the students that acted out.Tim Loose says, "Respect for the individual has been totally missing in this whole process - all I heard was this goal about changing behavior in the student body."After the parents aired their grievances, four students, representing the student body, presented an apology signed by more than 170 New Ulm students to the district.But after that planned presentation, various people involved with the school district gave their point of view of the situation."When they saw us walking, I just said out of here, out of here. Thankfully, out-numbered, they left. But they continued their chants outside and a group of them were trying to find doors to come back in.""This is not the first incident that happened. And while I understand that you need to isolate the incident, it's important to remember that this has happened before."No action was taken at last night's meeting, though the Superintendent said the district did not handle the situation perfectly, and that they will look into creating a better defined guideline for dealing with student behavior at extracurricular activities.
