After a DFL gubernatorial debate last week in Le Sueur, candidates from four parties traveled a little farther down 169 to do it again.Fox Mankato's Ryan Gustafson has the story.A total of eleven candidates vying for the state's top executive job in Minnesota gathered at Gustavus Adolphus College tonight. While a couple of third parties were present, as well as two Republicans, the focus was on the big guns in the DFL, as prospective voters and party insiders seek out their candidate. Rep. Terry Morrow says, "There hasn't been a Democratic governor for 2 decades now. We've had a string a Republican and Independent governors. So it will be interesting. There's not an incumbent running this year."That extended dry period has brought in a lot of big names. With so many at one table competeing for microphone time, perhaps their best tool is the one-on-one meet and greet beforehand. Rep. Morrow says, "There's certainly a number of characteristics that are important in looking for a candidate. One is state-wide appeal. Doesn't just appeal to one region. A candidate that has the ability to talk about the economy and jobs and health care is very important."Aside from the political pull the event carries, administrators at the college view it as an excellent learning opportunity for the students, and a great way for them to get involved. Jack Ohle says, "Gustavus feels that democracy is important to all graduates. Particularly to a college student who quite often is voting for the first time. It gives us a chance to have our students have an opportunity to meet candidates - to talk to them about issues and really find out what is at the heart of the political process."In St. Peter, Ryan Gustafson, The Fox Mankato News At Nine.
