Area Teachers Learn About Different World Cultures

Several area teachers had their roles reversed today, becoming the student... in order to learn about the different world cultures. And as News 12's Nathan Harrington tells us, they're hoping this training will inspire their students to change how they look at the globe.Sue Harris says, "You can't teach what you don't know."For some of these educators that means learning more about the world around them.Teachers from Lake Crystal, Truman, Madelia, and Maple River gathered at Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial High School for their World Cultures day.It was a day to increase their knowledge... as well as how to integrate that knowledge into their classroom.Tom Hanson says, "With every year that passes, the interconnected globalized nature of the world is really coming home to roost. You don't expect them to know all the information when they are very young, but to have the reflex in building and awareness on their own is something that's important."Building that awareness were instructors from the Minnesota International Center... whose goal was to show the teachers when it comes to different cultures, they may have a lot to learn.Jessica Stenzel says, "There are so many stereotypes about our countries and not half of them are true. So just tell them it's different than you think."Rafiath Rashid says, "I just wanted to represent Bangladesh. I just wanted to let them know where it is and how the people live life in Bangladesh."The message today for teachers here at Lake Crystal was diversity and integration. But they also need to learn how to teach their students that the globe is getting smaller every day.Sue Harris says, "What we as educators need to turn around and do for our students to create that interest, the imputes and excitement of understanding people that are different, countries that are different and how we should prepare our students for the world, the changing world we are living in."Harris says students now are the world leaders of tomorrow, and they need to learn about our ever-changing world. In Lake Crystal, Nathan Harrington, News 12.
