The holidays are here and that means get-togethers with family and presents that soon will be under the Christmas tree. But not everyone in the area will be so fortunate. And as News 12's Nathan Harrington shows us, two local organizations will be busy helping those who are less privileged have a happy holiday season. For some this holiday season will be about how much they can get. But for two non-profit organizations here in Mankato, it will be about how much they can give. The Holiday Sharing Tree and Salvation Army both kicked off their seasons of giving in a community that is known for its generosity.Liz Brown says, "In 23 consecutive years all of the needs have been fulfilled. And that's really a tribute to this community and the people that are willing to help out their neighbor."Every year the Holiday Sharing Tree pairs up the wish list of a needy family with people ready to help. The Salvation Army has now set up their famous red kettles around the city to drum up donations for those that need a helping hand this time of year.Capt. Michael Parker says, "Very emotional with the holidays coming up and kind of a heavy burden of their hearts. That's just an example of some people coming in looking for some help and some support and giving us an opportunity to try and meet these needs and sometimes they are bigger than we are."The Army is hoping to raise over 150 thousand dollars to meet community needs. But they are also looking for bell ringers to share the gift of their time and signal the time and place for giving. The Holiday Sharing Tree wants people to dig deep into their hearts and provide basic necessities for the over 3000 families they plan to help this year.Liz Brown says, "People use this as a learning experience for their children and families. They decide maybe they'll cut back and get one less gift under their tree and help someone else in need."A spirit of giving these groups want to continue this holiday season. In Mankato, Nathan Harrington, News 12.
