Farmers Hit The Fields To Wrap Up Fall Harvest

A long awaited stretch of nice weather has farmers hitting the fields in full force.News 12's Erin Reed spoke to farmers in Blue Earth County about their progress and how soon they think they'll they can wrap up this years harvest. The weather may have been damp this morning... but a stretch of nice days over the last week helped farmers finally catch up with this season's harvest.Kevin Paap says, "Things did not look good in October. There weren't many days suitable for fieldwork, and November typically isn't a great month for weather, but we had those eight days that were great. Made a big difference in the cost. A big difference in the bottom line."That bottom line means big savings on drying costs by letting Mother Nature take its course instead of drying corn mechanically...NATSTypically...for corn to go into storage it can't be higher than 15 percent moisture.Although moisture levels aren't that low they're much better than the last few weeks.Paap says, "Corn in the field today, what we've combined today is over 20 percent yet, much better than 30 percent, but still needs to be dried."It's not just farmers playing catch up....The weather set -backs have grain elevators putting in extra hours and playing catch -up as well.Grain Division Manager Tim Lewis of Crystal Valley Co-op in Vernon Center says, "Lots of overtime. And the farmers are putting more hours in than we are so they're the ones that we try and service."Even though getting into the fields was later than normal farmers are thankful they were able to finally get ahead.Paap says, "With the corn in this area, I think this part of Blue Earth County we're very fortunate. I think there's a lot of corn that's been out, probably 85 percent right in this area."Lewis says, "If the weather can hold out by the end of this weekend we should be in pretty good shape."In Blue Earth County Erin Reed, News 12.
