Some Lutheran Churches Consider Schism Over Gay Clergy Decision

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America is facing a sizeable conflict.Members and even entire congregations that disagree with the laws of the ELCA may be leaving and starting a brand new church body.News 12's Erick Lind has more.In August of last year the ELCA voted to allow pastors in committed same sex relationships. That decision has prompted a group of followers to question the move, and even consider leaving the synod. Now the organization Lutheran Core is working on a proposal for a new church body for those who choose to leave the ELCA.Pastor Michelle Rowell says, "We cannot find anything in the scriptures supporting this decision that we've made in the ELCA."At Christ the King in Mankato the pastoral staff has recognized that the issue threatens their stability and unity as a congregation.Christ the King's Pastor John Petersen says, "I think people are looking at it and saying, 'let's deal with it, but let's get on with what it means to be a church.'"Pastor Petersen says the church will be visited by Bishop Harold Usgaard who will speak to the congregation about the issue. The church will use focus groups, surveys, and written questions to help make a resolution and chart their future.Pastor Petersen says, "I'm hoping we can find a new way to focus on our mission in spite of a very challenging issue we're facing."While some congregations are determining whether or not to leave the ELCA, others have already made that choice, looking for a clearer stance on scripture and the law gospel relationships.Pastor Rowell says, "I don't think any of them were looking for a reason to go away from the ELCA. I think most of them are rather shocked and disappointed that the direction of the ELCA in recent years has seemed to be moving away from what is in our constitution."One of the five churches Rowell serves has already changed to a more traditional denominational structure. And in 2010... more could follow the same path.Erick Lind, News 12.
