MN PUC To Make Final Decision On Windfarm

A proposed wind farm in Lafayette Township has drummed up controversy for over two years.Next week, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission could make the final decision on the project.Fox Mankato's Ryan Gustafson has the story.Just west of Lafayette, a proposed wind farm by the city of New Ulm's Public Utilities Commission stands at a crossroads, as the state's PUC is set to make a decision on whether to award New Ulm a variance on the project.Out of the 475 acres needed, New Ulm has been able to lease 237, and they are now asking for that requirement to be lessened.Patrick Wrase says, "The site that we are pursuing, the Nicollet County site has a lot of things that make it an attractive site. It has a very good wind resource with the elevations. It's also very close to a regional transmission where we have an application to interconnect. The third thing is it's very close to our own transmission system."New Ulm wants to eventually place 5 wind turbines in the area, but standing in the way of the project are other landowners surrounding the proposed sites. And those farmers and livestock producers have found themselves getting involved like they never have before.Dan Wendinger says, "I've never spoke in front of groups, met with Senators. I've learned a lot, we all have really. It's probably something everyone should be involved with."Wendinger and others became involved in the project when it was first brought to the Nicollet County Board for approval, and have been tracking it ever since.Officials from the New Ulm PUC say a rejection by the state board may mean an end to the project.Landowners opposed to it say they will continue to fight if it is accepted, though they are optimistic of their chances.Dan Wendinger says, "They understand the situation - it would be precedent setting to give them the waiver so obviously we hope that they stick to the rules that have been in place all along. We'll see what happens."In Lafayette Township, Ryan Gustafson, The Fox Mankato News At Nine.
