The heated summer debates over health care reform legislation have cooled for the moment, but as the process for merging two vastly different bills begins, that heated debate is expected to ramp back up.News 12's Ryan Gustafson had a chance to talk health care with Congressman Tim Walz today, and he joins us live in the newsroom with more. It's been a long and grueling debate over health care reform.Phrases like public option, pre-existing condition and death panel entered the national lexicon. And Representative Walz says it has been hashed over by the Congress just as much as it has by the public.Congressman Tim Walz says, "We've debated it longer than any other thing that's been debated in Congress ever so with this issue is take your time. We've take more time than anything done in the country."Moving forward, Congressman Walz believes the Senate and the House of Representatives will use an informal process when reconciling the two bills, to avoid procedural votes in the Senate that Democrats expect Republicans to filibuster. But despite months of impassioned discussions, arguments and outright screaming matches, the Congressman says he can live with the brunt of the bill.Congressman Walz says, "I said there were a few lines in the sand needed in order for me to support it. It had to have pay-for-value, to get rid of pre-existing conditions, and it had to make sure it was deficit neutral."Whatever comes out of the Democratic leadership's reconciliation of the bills, they will have little room for error.A change of two votes in the House, or one vote in the Senate could kill the bill. We'll have more from Congressman Walz on health care later tonight on the Fox Mankato News at Nine, as well as News 12 at Ten.Live in the newsroom, Ryan Gustafson, News 12.
