New Recycling Program

A new recycling program in Waseca and Owatonna began today, with hope of getting people involved with recycling away from home.As News 12's Sara Miles tells us, the message actually comes from all the bottles and other plastics floating around.Everyday millions of bottles and cans end up in our nation's landfill's... ((nats))But the Recycling Association of Minnesota is hoping to change that with the Message in the Bottle program.Executive Director of Recycling Association of Minnesota Ellen Telander "we're trying to capture those containers instead of having it go into the trash we're offering recycling options, just because that is where there is a lot of bottles and cans going into the waste stream."So much... that bottles and cans make up 50 percent of what is thrown away at a gas station.((nats))Instead of tossing it in the trash, people away from home can recycle them in any of the containers located at our area's gas stations.Ellen Telander says, "this is an option for those individuals or for those who are cleaning out their car at the gas station they can do this."Stand Up - Message in a bottle gives people on the go a quick way to recycle... all you have to do is take your empty plastic bottles or cans and put them in the bin.MRCI Recycling Coordinator Tammi Leiferman says, "we try to make them very visible so it's easy for people and gas stations are good places because the bottles are right there and accessible to them."Blue Earth County has run the program with the help of MRCI for two years.Tammi Leiferman says, "its been very good"So good... that thousands of recyclables haven't been wasted.Tammi Leiferman says, "over the last year we have over 37 thousand pounds recycled... that's just in the bottles and cans we collect."With that many bottles and cans kept out of landfills, it appears people are finally getting the message.((nats))Sara Miles, News 12
