In Health Watch:A new study finds that many women have a lot to learn when it comes to heart disease.Many don't know the basic symptoms of a heart attack... and how they can differ from men's.Janet Choi has more.Gail Blanke enjoys life now.But 3 years ago, she had a serious health problem.Gail says, 'It wasn't an ache or a pain, it was a dark hollow cold feeling in my chest and it lasted 3-4 minutes.'Doctors found she had two major blocked arteries.Gail says, 'they did a double bypass surgery.'If she had waited any longer, Blanke may have had a massive heart attack.Dr. Marianne Legato says, 'the classic symptoms of a heart attack are heaviness in the chest, shortness of breath, sweating, pain radiating to the jaw or down both arms.'But 15 to 20 percent of women will never experience those telltale signs, which can make it hard to know exactly what 's happening to them.These women will complain of indigestion, pain in the back, extreme fatigue, nausea and shortness of breath.Dr. Legato says, 'women need to educate themselves.'But a new study, called Go Red for Women... shows almost half of those polled didn't know the symptoms of heart disease or that it is the number one killer of women.And when it comes to prevention many seek help from therapies that aren't scientifically proven.69 percent believed multivitamins help prevent heart problems.29 percent said aroma therapy was a preventative strategy.Gail was lucky... she did the right thing... and got the right help.Gail Blanke says, 'you have to be smart.'It could be a matter of life and death.
