The National Commander of the American Legion made a stop in Mankato today as part of a four-day visit to Minnesota. And as News 12's Nathan Harrington tells us, the leader of the Legion wants to change the way the Legion reaches out to new veterans. It's been over a decade since the National Commander of the American Legion has come to Mankato.Clarence Hill of Florida visited Post 11 in downtown this afternoon.Congressman Tim Walz, a veteran and member of the Legion was in attendance and talked about what a huge honor it was...Rep. Tim Walz says, "To have a national commander here, it says something. It lets our legion leaders talk about issues that rural veterans are facing and some of the other issues."Issues like veterans health care are at the top of most legionnaire's lists.Commander Hill says it all starts at the local level at the individual posts throughout the country.Commander Clarence Hill says, "We have over 14,000 American Legion Posts and we have that many reputations. So it's what they do in the community that gets the American Legion noticed."And Commander Hill is working on new ways for the Legion to get noticed by veterans returning from wars now...Commander Clarence Hill says, "I'm of the belief that WWI vets had to adapt to the thinking of WWII and Korea. WWII and Korea had to adapt to Vietnam. We have to adapt to all those categories that come after Vietnam."The tech savvy younger veterans are using social networking sites like Facebook, and now the Legion is doing the same.Hill says it's a way to reach out to soldiers coming back from war that need support and help adjusting to life back home.Commander Clarence Hill says, "My thrust has been to take advantage of the internet. Not to stop doing the personal handshakes and the door to door, and letter writing campaigns and other things we do, but to add these social networks to our arsenal."Hill says reaching out to younger vets now will keep the Legion strong in the future. In Mankato, Nathan Harrington, News 12.
