Legislative Democrats and Governor Tim Pawlenty struck a deal Friday to preserve state-run health care for more than 30 thousand vulnerable adults. This, just hours before state officials planned to begin switching patients into a less comprehensive health plan. The agreement will maintain the General Assistance Medical Care program at about a quarter of its current funding level. The reduction will hurt hospitals and other medical providers, but patients who live on less than eight dollars a day... including veterans, addicts, the homeless and the mentally ill...will get needed care.Governor Tim Pawlenty says, "one of the challenges we have with the GAMC population is that it's episodic...you have people that come and go, they don't have coordinated care, there's not maintenance care in many cases, and we hope this model will be better with those goals in mind."
