Good evening, I'm Dion Cheney. And I'm Nicole Winters, thanks forThe warmer temperatures are a sign spring is right around the corner...But the high temps, melting snow, and rain on the way... could dampen spirits.News 12's Jennifer Hudspeth tells us what you should know about the flood forecast and Mankato's plan of action if flooding should happen.April showers bring May flowers... but as we anxiously await spring... showers in March could bring...flooded rivers.Mitch Keegan says, "It looks like there's going to be some river flooding mostly minor to moderate flooding in our area, but again it doesn't take a lot of water or a lot of flooding to cause a lot of problems."The snow and slush on the ground is between 5 and 10 inches of actual liquid moisture, and rain on the way only means even more water to deal with.Keegan says, "We have that much moisture just sitting on top of the ground and if we have another inch of rain to it, that's like having between 6 to 12 inches of liquid water sitting on the ground and since the ground's frozen there's not a lot of places for that water to go."Jennifer Hudspeth says, "Right now all eyes are on the Minnesota River, Mankato City Officials say they are constantly monitoring the water levels and definitely have a plan of action if the river continues to rise."Tony Talamantez says, "Year round even if there's not a lot of snow, we're always on the flood control system."That system has many components...If the river gets too high the city will close gates that pump the cityside water into the river."If we can hold that back, pump it at intervals the river won't come up as fast."The National Weather Service reports there's a 63% chance the river could reach 22 feet deep.Officials say if the water gets to 20 feet public works and city engineers will begin a dike walk... checking for anything that's cause for concern. And No matter what the weather brings... officials say Mankato will be prepared.Talamantez says, "We work very hard to keep the flood control system top notch and it has to be... you can't have a flood."In Mankato, Jennifer Hudspeth News 12.The flood forecast also shows a 32 percent chance of water levels reaching 25 feet...which could flood several parts of 169 between Mankato and St. Peter. And a 7 percent chance of it reaching 28.5 feet.
