Mankato Public Schools Safety Procedures In Place

None of our schools in the area were affected by the lockdown, but they do have their own set of policies for handling threats.News 12's Sara Miles joins us live in the newsroom and tells us how both law enforcement and schools work together to keep our students safe.Nicole-DionThere has not been a district wide shut down ever in the Mankato Public School districts history, but that hasn't stopped them from developing practices incase it does happen. Each year the district performs five practice lockdowns at each of the schools... combining the efforts of school personnel as well as the community. The different types of lockdowns vary, but it can be severe as keeping students away from all doors and windows... to making sure security is watching who comes in and out of the building.Mankato West Principal Brian Gersich says, "it's important when we are working with young people that we create a sense of calm, so that we don't create a panic in young people and we are very fortunate to not have things happen here that jeopardize the safety of our students."Another part of keeping students safe is calling upon local law enforcement officials.Although it is up to the school to decide whether or not to lockdown, police will offer their advice in addition to tracking down where the threat came from.Detective Commander Matt DuRose says, "determine the location of the person doing the threatening... if it's a bomb type threat then finding out where the call was made and using our investigative tools that are available to us to determine who the person is and where they are calling from or where the threat is coming from."Although the district has never had to completely lockdown... some individual schools have... either because of a neighborhood situation or because the school felt there was a threat to the students.Principal Gersich also tells me although all threats are taken seriously, there is some skepticism when a bomb threat is called. The threats that are taken most serious are the ones posted online between students.Live in the Newsroom, SM, News 12
