Fairmont School District Extends Days To Make Up Snow Days

The unusually high amount of snow days this winter has many districts looking for ways to make up the lost instruction time. While many are adding days, the Fairmont Area School District has decided to add minutes.News 12's Ryan Gustafson explains. The Fairmont Area School District missed six full days of school because of the weather this year.Three of the days will be made up in full. But those three remaining days will be made up by adding fifteen minutes at the end of every school day.Butch Hanson says, "We have a lot of information to cover and we want to make sure our kids have as great an opportunity to make a year's worth of progress and so if you lose three or four days off of that schoolwork, obviously it make it more difficult."The district scheduled 177 instruction days this year, and they want to make sure that every ounce of the lesson plan gets passed along to their students. It's been a similar practice for the district from year to year, but the snowfall this time around forced them to take extra steps.Butch Hanson says, "Last couple of years we have tried to make up all of our days. It just hasn't been as much as this year. Martin County became a focal point of a lot of snow and wind."At the junior high and high school, a few minutes will be added to each period in order to make up the time. But the biggest impact will probably be seen best at the elementary level.Butch Hanson says, "They're working on putting some focus of that additional time on reading and math. Especially for students that are we are trying to give some second helpings and a little more assistance to them."The new schedule will go into effect starting next Monday, and will continue until school is let out on June 4th.In Fairmont, Ryan Gustafson, News 12.
