Congressman Walz Has a Plan for Unemployed Vets

New war veterans have continued to suffer the weight of heavy unemployment.But Congressman Tim Walz hopes to change that with an initiative to cut unemployment numbers.News 12's Caroline Rowland tells us about a new bill he's proposing... and who it would effect.Lowell Honsey, Unemployed Veteran says, "It's easier to have a job than not one at all. Unemployment only goes so far."Lowell Honsey is facing the troubles that many of his fellow young veterans are....he's unemployed.He's been out of the Navy since 2008, and still hasn't been able to find a job.Lowell Honsey, Unemployed Veteran says, "Just filling out application after application, and not really hearing nothing."Congressman Tim Walz says, "When we ask young people to put their lives on hold, they fall behind their peer group, in seniority at their companies."Congressman Tim Walz says all the time veterans spend away from their communities... actually puts them at a disadvantage in the job market.It also contributes to the high rate of unemployment among newly discharged vets, now at almost 22 percent.Congressman Tim Walz says, "What we needed to do, we're hearing from folks is make this process simpler for a veteran, make it simpler for the employer."The bill being proposed by Congressman Walz is a revised version of the VET Act.It aims at making tax breaks for businesses that hire returning veterans easier and would extend the bill to cover veterans who are five years out of the service.James Wendorff, Viracon, says, "Viracon right now has about 1300 employees on our Owatonna campus, we have several hundred veterans."Viracon, a glass fabrication company out of Owatonna makes a point of hiring recent veterans.They say all companies should make the same effort.James Wendorff, Viracon, says, "Make returning veterans know that they're wanted, needed and welcomed, and it's a win win for everyone, a win for the vet, a win for the organization and I think a win for the organization."And hopefully a win for unemployed vets like Honsey...who says at this point he'll take any job.Lowell Honsey, Unemployed Veteran says, "I'd work just about anywhere doesn't matter to me."In Owatonna.
