John Michel grew up on farm in Rice County while his wife Marilyn spent her childhood in Minneapolis. Their paths crossed when John was attending Mankato State College in 1954.  Marilyn was a student at Northwestern College.

After John graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois, their mutual interest in Christ and gospel music led them to marriage in August of 1956. Marilyn received her music degree in May of 1957. John was ordained as a Baptist pastor in June of 1957 and they organized Grace Baptist Church of Mankato in November of the same year. There were only 7 founding members of the mission congregation at the outset.

He drew from his experience as an announcer at KTIS radio to start a radio broadcast called "Midnight Devotions" on KTOE the same week that Grace Baptist Church held its first public services. After 3 ½ years Pastor Michel signed a contract to start "I Believe In Miracles" on KEYC-TV in February of 1961. He got permission to use the music by that title written by John W. Peterson as the theme song for the telecast. Pastor Michel retired from Grace Baptist Church after 46 years but continues to minister in the community as well as through the telecast.
