Saint Clair is back in the state football tournament after a two decade drought.
News 12 Sports Erick Lind says a big reason the Cyclones upset Adrian in the section 3–A championship is one of the smallest players in stature on the team.
He's John Goebel and he's our KEYC Scheels All–Sports Boys Prep Athlete of the Week.
John Goebel is listed at 5 foot 8 on the Saint Clair roster, which might even be a stretch, but his coach will tell you he plays much larger on the field as the heart and soul of the Cyclones football team.
The Cyclones' junior is starting at fullback and just 20 yards behind the leading rusher.
At middle linebacker Goebel leads the team in tackles with 56 1/2, to go along with 4 sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and one defensive score.
Goebel was huge in the section championship rushing for 145 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries.
Not to mention he ran in a two point conversion and recovered a fumble.
Goebel will look to continue punishing opponents on Friday in the class–A state quarterfinal.
That's why he's our KEYC Scheels All–Sports Boys Prep Athlete of the Week.
