The MSU women's soccer team was treading on new ground when they entered the Division Two Elite Eight this afternoon.
The Mavericks won their first regional championship on Friday in a shootout and would meet Grand Valley State University in the quarterfinals this afternoon in Allendale Michigan.
It did not look good for MSU in the 2nd half, already trailing by one in the 69th minute when Casey McMillan outruns the defenders and beats Molly McGuff to give the Lakers the 2-0 lead.
You can't count the Mavericks out though, as they get a free kick in the 83rd minute and Caitlin Graboski will get it past Chelsea Parise to make it a one goal game.
Just over two minutes later, MSU on the attack again and Breanna Steele gets set up on the door step to boot it in and tie it at two...where it would stay through both overtimes forcing a shootout.
4th round tied at two and McGuff keeps it that way turning away Erin Hilbert.
5th round, MSU goes in front when Ashley Sykora puts it in.
That would give the Mavs a chance to win it, and McGuff nearly does as she deflects Ashely Botts attempt, but it still finds a way into the net sending it to extra shooters.
Both teams score in the 6th round, but the Mavs would miss in round seven when Nicole Dooher puts it over the crossbar.
That would give the Lakers a chance for the win, and Taylor Callen seals it with McGuff going the other way, and the celebration is on as Grand Valley State wins the shootout 5-4 to advance to the final four.
