Every so often there are teachers that come along that really inspire. We found one of those at Nicollet Public School, Dana Smith.
Nominated by one of her students, Ms. Smith has the enormous task of inspiring the kids of today to be the scientists of tomorrow. Mixing standard lectures with fun and engaging hands on activities, Ms. Smith teaches for every kid.
Mitchel Will, an eighth grader, doesn't have Ms. Smith as a science teacher, however, he is looking forward to next year when he does. Will says, "I don't see Smith as just a teacher, I see her as a friend, someone who I can always go to."
Students not only learn, they have fun while in her class. Jennifer Baumgartner, Principal at Nicollet Public School, says, "She has a passion for it that you know just really brings it alive and she is working on things like flipping the classroom so the kids can get the instruction anytime anywhere."
Ms. Smith loves seeing the light bulbs of her students go off when they get it. To the future scientists, Smith says, "Keep learning, keep learning when you leave school don't stop."
Congratulations again to Dana Smith on the Golden Apple.
