MANKATO , MINN. -

People checking out the Kiwanis Lights Display this holiday season were asked to donate money or food items. Just over 13 tons of food was collected. The food was donated to 12 area food shelves including Mankato's ECHO food shelf. ECHO volunteer Carolyn Kanyusik says, "It feels wonderful you know it's our community coming together to help our neighbors. That's what we do."

Kanyusik  says there are many families that are just one paycheck away from needed food shelf assistance. An average of 70 families visit the Echo's food shelf each day.
