MSU Women's Hockey Falls Short Of Sweeping UMD

Posted: Updated:

It was a great start to the weekend for the MSU hockey teams on the shore of Lake Superior.
The 11th ranked men swept UMD Friday and Saturday.
The Maverick women got the best of the 10th ranked Bulldogs in their series opener yesterday with a 2-1 win.
This afternoon the Mavs were looking to change AMSoil Arena's name to the broom closet.
MSU never trailed in the opener, but the Mavs were down one in the first period today, before Lauren Smith and Kathleen Rogan attack on the powerplay with Rogan lighting the lamp to tie it up.
2nd period would see the Bulldogs go back in front when Aleksandra Vafina feeds Brienna Gillanders who gets the one timer to go.
Duluth would put it out of reach later in the 2nd when they win the faceoff and Jessica Wong connects on the wrister for the 3-1 lead.
MSU would score one more time in the third from Lauren Smith, but the Mavericks miss out on the sweep, falling 4-2.
