After several years of waiting and planning, the Walmart distribution center will finally be making its way to town.
The massive four hundred thousand-plus square foot facility will begin operations in 2015.
Both Mankato and Blue Earth County have been setting the stage for Walmart's location off of county road 12 and Highway 14 for several years.
And the business community sees it as a perfect weathervane for which way the Mankato economy is heading.
Greater Mankato Growth's Jonathan Zierdt says, "Having Walmart make this announcement today just continues to give a vote of confidence in this marketplace and it comes from an organization that has a very significant caliber and international stage in which it plays. For them to be a partner and to make and do business in this community says a lot about the business assets that are here and the ability for this community to have businesses and be successful."
The distribution center will store and deliver groceries to Wal-Mart stores in the Upper Midwest.
The company expects to add 300 permanent jobs once the first phase of the project is completed.
