When the season started, it seemed improbable that the MSU men's hockey team could be in contention for hosting a first round series of the WCHA tournament with a first year head coach.
That was the case Saturday however when the 10th ranked Mavericks hosted 5th ranked North Dakota.
UND strikes first in the opening minutes of the game when Stephon Williams dropped the shot from Brenden O'Donnell in front of his own net, and Danny Kristo taking advantage to put it in the net. MSU would answer in the final minute of the 2nd period with a goal from Dylan Margonari. It would stayed tied and head to overtime where the Mavericks would win with a great pass from J.P. Lafontaine to Brett Knowles on the doorstep to light the lamp. MSU wins 2-1, and finishes the regular season tied for 4th, keeping UND from a share of the conference title. The Mavericks will host a first round series in the WCHA Final Five, they just don't know which team it is as of Saturday night.
