Diabetes Rate Increase

MANKATO , MINN. -

In the past 20 years state health officials say the diabetes rate has doubled and tens of thousands more are unaware that they even have the disease. The Minnesota Department of Health estimates just under 300,000 Minnesotans have been diagnosed with diabetes, and that 80,000 others have it, but aren't aware of it because symptoms of type 2 diabetes aren't that obvious.Registered dietician Grace Fjeldberg says, "Sometimes people can have elevated blood sugars for a long period of time without feeling any symptoms out of the ordinary."

Fjeldberg says developing diabetes can often be a gradual process that can be prevented by acquiring a healthier lifestyle. The health department estimates more than a million Minnesotans are prediabetic but don't know it
