April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month in Minnesota.
Approximately one in three of all crashes have some sort of distracted element says Sgt. Jacalyn Sticha with the Minnesota State Patrol. But it isn't just cell phones that cause distractions. Eating, putting on makeup, reading, even changing clothes are all deadly distractions.
"Keep in mind that a distraction is a distraction and we're two ton heavy vehicles driving very fast, very close to other fast moving heavy vehicles. And it is something so incredibly dangerous that need to pay full attention," Sticha says.
Minnesota law bans texting outright when behind the wheel. Novice drivers and bus drivers are also banned from using cellular devices, even if it's hands free. New legislation also requires commercial vehicle drivers to use hands free devices.
