MSU Finally Gets Home Baseball Game, Beats Augustana 10-2

Posted: Updated:

It was finally the home opener for the MSU baseball team today, but even that was delayed by rain this time, pushing the start with Augustana back three hours.
When they finally got underway, Mavericks' pitcher Harvey Martin was ready to go striking out Tony Viger looking to end the top of the first...Martin's 2nd strikeout in a row, finishing with 11 k's.
It would be a pretty good defensive game to start with MSU threatening in the third with a man on third and two out, but Scott Lindner grounds to Viger who throws to Springfield native Alex Fink at first to keep the game scoreless.
That changes in the top of the 4th seeing the Vikings on the board when Jake Peterson turns on one and takes it out of the park...a solo shot...1-0 Augustana.
Home half of the innings sees the Mavs answer with Connor McCallum taking Kye Winter deep to the opposite field...also a solo shot, making it a 1-all game.
MSU would get their next two batters into scoring position, and that is exactly what Stetson Olson does single through the right side to score Nolan Johnson and Taylor Branstad is not far behind...that would be the game winner, but the Mavs would add seven more.
Olson would add a three run homer in the fifth for a season high 5-rbis, and MSU goes on to win 10-2 in seven innings...and the late start to game one postponed game two to Monday at a time to be determined.
The same two teams have a double header scheduled for Sunday with game times at noon and two.
