The Children's Museum of Southern Minnesota is one step closer to having a permanent location for its exhibit. Originally the Children's Museum had asked to purchase the building from the city of Mankato for one dollar. Members of the city's Economic Development Authority voted to authorize leasing Mankato's old mass transit building for the next fifty years charging the museum a dollar each year. By leasing the building, the children's museum would be considered a public entity, making it eligible for state funding. The final lease still needs to be approved by the full council. However, all council members except for Karen Foreman expressed their support for the Children's Museum project. Forman is against the lease over concerns that this would set a precedent for all other nonprofit organizations to request similar deals.
