The American Red Cross has issued an emergency request for platelet and blood donors of all blood types.
Officials say donations were down 10-percent in June and through the first week of July - that's 50,000 short of donations projected nationwide. Summer breaks, holidays and vacations all factored in to the drop. Hospitals, in Minnesota alone, use about 800 pints a day to meet patient needs.
American Red Cross South Central Minnesota Chapter, Executive Director, Bob Meyer, says,"So we want to make sure that there's an adequate blood supply at your nearest hospital. And there's only one way to get that blood supply, and that's for you to donate blood." The local chapter of the Red Cross held a drive today that included a cookout. That blood drive continues tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 105 Homestead Drive, in Mankato. Root Beer Floats will be offered to anyone making a donation (Friday, July 12, 2013).
