A fire burns a Mankato home late Friday morning causing significant damage and killing a pet.
It happened about 11:00 a.m. on the 500 block of North Broad Street.
Smoke could be seen for several city blocks. Officials say the fire was in the back of the building and a second floor apartment.
Mankato Public Safety's Jeff Bengston says, "The initial crews arrived and saw one occupant waiting on the front porch for them. It was unknown if there was anybody on the second floor. Fire crews did a quick initial attack to knock down the fire in the back and the porch and then went inside to search for victims as well as contain the fire from extending throughout the second floor."
While everyone had gotten out of the building, in their search firefighters found a black lab that had died in the fire.
There is an estimated $100,000 worth of damage. Officials aren't sure yet what may have caused the fire.
Due to the warm weather, firefighters made sure to stay well hydrated.
