The annual Mahkato PowWow at Land of Memories Park kicked off with its traditional Education Day.
For over two decades the Mahkato Mdewakanton Association has been educating area 3rd graders on the land's Dakota history.
Over 600 third graders attended the event where they heard stories, learned about the prayer board and saw an eagle.
"It's about education and reconciliation and through reconciliation through education," says David Braveheart, who chairs the association. "That's part of why we want to be able to impart some knowledge and some history and some customs, traditions to young folks who are really eager to learn about the history of the Dakota people here."
Buttons for the Mahkato Wacipi PowWow are seven dollars for the entire weekend.
