Fairmont's new water treatment plant is online, even as work continues on the $28 million project.
The new plant first went online on September 9th, and is expected to be completed some time in October.
It will be able to treat up to 5.4 million gallons of water a day, far more than the average 1.5 million the city uses currently.
Fairmont Public Works Director and city engineer Troy Nemmers says, "The plant should be around for quite a few years. We shouldn't have to do any expansion. Unless regulations change and we have to add some treatment process, we should be in pretty good shape for many years to come."
The city is planning an open house event for the public to tour the new facility later this fall, as well as the demolition of the old plant which is located directly across the street.
