The Fairmont football team is headed to state for the 2nd time in three years. This season, the Cardinals are lead by junior quarterback Spencer Chirpich. News 12 Sports Claire Dau has more on why he's our KEYC Scheels All-Sports Boys Prep Athlete of the Week.
"Spencer Chirpich, the best way I can describe him as a quarterback is that he's a gunslinger," says Coach Mat Mahoney. "He can throw the ball really far, really well. He's also a heck of a baseball player; he was all-state as a freshman. The kid is a great overall athlete."
"I came in, I knew I was going to be the starting quarterback so I kept working hard from there, getting in the flow of the offense."
Coach Mahoney adds; "He knows his offense, he's thrown for about 2,000-yards on the season, he was actually leading the state at the end of the regular season with 27 touchdowns he's currently at 31 on the season and that's only with 6 interceptions."
"It felt pretty good," said Chirpich. "One of my goals this season was to set a record; I did that in the Blue Earth game, that was pretty cool. I think I was leading the school too, that was a good feeling."
"When he walks in the huddle, everyone's paying attention, everyone's listening," adds Mahoney. "Every player knows what's going on, there's no communication failure with Spencer because the boys listen to what he has to say and that's a big part of being quarterback. He's a very accurate thrower, he's a great leader, just a great football player for us here at Fairmont."
That's why he's our KEYC All-Sports Boys Prep-Athlete of the Week.
