First Pope's Bones Seen in Public

Posted: Updated:

Pope Francis braved chilly and wet weather, holding an outdoor mass in St. Peter's Square.

Sunday's mass officially concluded the Year of Faith, initiated by Francis's predecessor Pope Benedict XVI before his resignation in February.

Displayed at the mass for the first time in public are what the Vatican believes are the bones of the Apostle Peter.

The relics which were found in the mausoleums beneath St. Peter's Basilica in 1942 and subsequently tested and identified by the Vatican, were placed in a bronze chest with Latin inscription and displayed by the altar.
