Officials re-ignite holiday, fire-prevention campaign in Mankato

MANKATO, Minn. -

The Mankato Department of Public Safety has re-ignited its holiday, fire-prevention campaign.

Officials want local residents to keep the wreath outside the Mankato Public Safety Center lit with white-colored light bulbs.

For every preventable blaze in Mankato, a red bulb will replace a white one. And for every fire-related injury, a blue bulb will be inserted.

When it comes to preventing fires this time of the year, officials say a key component revolves around kitchens.

"Cooking fires are far and away the most common cause of fires, and as we are entertaining our guests over the holiday season, there's a higher likelihood of being distracted," said Deputy Director Jeff Bengtson of the Mankato Department of Public Safety.

Last year there were 2 preventable fires and no injuries.

The wreath will be on display for the duration of the holiday season.
