New gates are at the top and bottom of Stadium Road, Monks Avenue, and Parkway Avenue hills. During a major winter storm, these hills can quickly become hazardous.
Before today, several street crews would need to scramble and get barricades out of storage to close the steep parts of those roads. To describe a recent case, Deputy Director of Mankato Public Safety, Matt Westermayer, says, "Public Works hadn't had yet even a chance to get the barricades to the top of the hill....and as they were rushing to get the barricades, people were continuing to come down Monks hill. Once they cleared the crest of that hill, there's no turning back. Their trying to navigate down to the ...you know, staying on the road. Some were going off to the side. Some were actually making it to the bottom of the hill without going off the side and then they were piling into one another at the bottom."
Now, it will take just one public safety officer to lower the gates and close a hill.
