Looking Back on 2013 Sports Moments

Posted: Updated:

Each year our area produces sports memories that take our breath away and capture our hearts. And just when you think these athletes couldn't be any more impressive, they continue to raise the bar.

2013 was the year the girls stole the show on the prep stage.Carlie Wagner...the future Gopher.... took the state by surprise while leading the NRHEG Panthers to a state title...scoring 50 of the 60 points in the championship game.

Yet, her magical prep career isn't quite over yet and she's on pace to lead the Panthers back to the promised land after just reaching the 3,000 point milestone.

And in the pool, Danielle Nack of Mankato West, who will be joining Wagner at the U, capped off a stellar career... winning individual titles while helping the Scarlets to a second place finish at the state tournament– their highest finish in school history.

Then to the diamond we head as the New Ulm Eagles claimed their second state softball title in as many years. The Eagles defeated Kasson–Manterville in thrilling fashion by a score of 1–0 in the finals held at Caswell Park.

It was also the females who stole the show on the professional level...as Glen Taylor's Minnesota Lynx won their second WNBA championship in three years.

But the guys didn't disappoint either.

MSU will have a hard time coming up with a team of the year after several teams posted impressive seasons.

First, the MSU baseball team posted an impressive run, making it all the way to the national championship game before falling to Tampa– the best finish in school history.

Then the football team took the field and earned the number one national ranking for most of the season. However, the Mavs fell to St. Cloud in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

And finally, although it happened just recently, Minnesota said good–bye to a building that was home to two World Series and countless memories for local athletes as well as the professionals.

After 31 years the Metrodome will no longer be in service...marking the end of an era and a fresh start for the New Year.

With all these memories, it will be tough to top 2013...but that's the magic of sports...believing in the impossible and daring to dream big.
