Blizzard Causes School and Road Closures

Posted: Updated:

The heavy snow has left us and the winds are starting to calm down, but it was a tough time on the roads last night and this morning.

That caused numerous schools to delay classes or cancel all together.

Almost 60 schools and daycares had a weather related delay or cancellation.

Mankato, Fairmont, New Ulm, St. Peter and Waseca schools were among those that closed.

Classes before 10 AM were canceled at Minnesota State University Mankato.

Gustavus Adolphus also ran two hours late.

The South Central College campuses in North Mankato and Faribault are closed.

Travel was difficult if not impossible across the area last night and this morning.

MN DOT is still advising no travel across much of the region.

This was the scene this morning in Owatonna.

The interstate was closed for much of the morning from Owatonna to the Iowa border, but just before noon it re-opened from Albert Lea to the Iowa border.

This is near the Owatonna airport.

The Minnesota State Patrol is on scene diverting traffic off the interstate.

As you can see, the snow was still blowing this morning and this is a scene that is repeated around southern Minnesota.

The road was closed due to blowing snow and numerous accidents.
