With over forty days of low temperatures hitting at or below zero degrees this winter, many people had pipes freeze.
Since the 90's, the city of Waseca has loaned a pump to qualified professionals that can be used to help break apart ice blocks in pipes.
The process works by feeding a plastic pipe pumping in warm water toward the blockage.
Originally costing $600, the system is able to traverse several hundred feet of piping, and save homes and businesses potentially thousands of dollars in damage.
Carl Sonnenberg, the Utilities Director for the City of Waseca, says "So I said to the guy, 'What if the utility company bought one, just to loan out to local plumbers. Would you actually use it?'
Well of course. So that's the way it's been working out since 1998."
Sonnenberg says the pump has been loaned out 8 times so far this year.
This compares to the two times from last year.
