'Grow MANkato' Kicks off No Shave November

Posted: Updated:
You may see a few more mustaches this month starting today, in effort to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer with a 'Shave Down.'

The event is called "Grow MANkato", which is a take off of the common "No-Shave November".

Men in the community are encouraged to grow their best beards for this month.

But before the stubble, people were invited to Y Barbers in North Mankato, this morning to start with a fresh face.

The Shave Down included a classic straight razor shave, hot towel and lather for just $20.

Event organizer, Chris Harstad , says, "This was my first time getting a clean shave. So I loved the hot towel. Maureen did a great job on me. My wife said this is going to be the first time she sees me completely shaven.  But its definitely a different experience but love it. It feels great."

The concept came together as Chris Harstad and Jonathan Zierdt worked to raise awareness in light of their own personal experiences.

Jonathan Zierdt said, "For a couple of survivors it's incredibly fulfilling, and really nurturing for us and hopefully for others who are in the same place we are. As survivors or maybe someone who is just beginning the journey. To know that this is a community who really cares and wraps itself around you."

The no shave month, will come to a clean end at the Mustache Bash on November 29th at Pub 500 in Mankato.
