Weekend Mavs Hockey Game Made For A Busy Downtown

Posted: Updated:

With the thousands of fans that crowded into the Verizon Wireless Center this past weekend to watch the Men's Maverick Hockey Game versus Michigan Tech, the downtown bars and restaurants were also packed with guests from all over the Midwest.

3,000 loyal fans of both the Mavericks and the Michigan Tech men's hockey teams had their eyes glued to the puck for Friday and Saturday night's games.

Following the Men's Maverick Hockey win this past weekend many took to the downtown bars to celebrate and bar owners say this weekend was one of the busiest they've ever seen.

Owner of Pub 500 Tom Frederick said, "Given the fact that they had a shot at the MacNaughton Cup, yeah more people came out.Michigan Tech, being the third rated team in the country also traveled well so we had quite a few of their fans as well and they had a lot of fun experiencing Mankato."

While the Mavs didn't come out with a win Friday night, fans and Maverick players left the Verizon Center Saturday night overjoyed with a big win.

Sports Commission Director at Visit Mankato Chris Willaert said, "MSU Hockey doing what they're doing right now it draws people downtown, brings people to the area, puts people in our hotels, makes our restaurants busy."

And while many bars are still recuperating from a busy weekend, experts say two sold out games made for a successful weekend for the entire town.

Willaert said, "The purpose of that arena is to drive money into the economy and I think based on this weekend it accomplished that this weekend."
