Bells Ring Remembering End Of Civil War

Posted: Updated:
Bells across Minnesota rang out to commemorate the 150th anniversary of events that symbolically ended the Civil War.

The School Sisters of Notre Dame are taking part in the commemoration, taking turns ringing the bell for four minutes.

Each minute represents a year of the historic war, and starts at the same time the meeting between Robert Lee and Ulysses S. Grant in Virginia brought an end to the war in 1865.

"To commemorate the end of a war, and I think you know it was a Civil War, and we're ringing bells saying the Civil War has been over, and if the rest of the Civil Wars in our world could end it would be wonderful also, and I think that's what the bells are saying."

The School Sisters of Notre Dame of Mankato will also soon be celebrating their 150th anniversary.
