This Memorial Day, St. Peter is starting the fundraising for a new veterans' memorial.

The St. Peter Area Veterans Memorial Association is looking to create a $600,000 monument to remember U.S. service members as far back as the Revolutionary War.

The memorial will be located in the northeast corner of Minnesota Square Park, along Highway 169.

It will include a wall for names and a statue.

Planning started four years ago but the idea has been around for a number of years.

St. Peter Area Veterans Memorial Association President Bob Lambert says, "Ever since St. Peter lost seven young men in Vietnam, there has been a lot of discussion of and on over the years about having a memorial, not just those young men but for our veterans World War II, the Korean War, World War I, and on back."

Organizers have not yet set a date for construction to begin.
