MANKATO, Minn. -

Area Xcel Energy employees and their families are taking party in the company's fifth annual Day of Service.

About 20 people volunteered their time this morning to help Partners for Affordable Housing.

The work includes painting, cleaning and improving the exterior of the Theresa House and Welcome Inn.

For the nonprofit, the volunteers help to maintain the 100-year-old houses and allows the organization to focus on the issue of homelessness and providing a safe and welcoming place.

Partners for Affordable Housing Executive Director Deb Newman said, "When people are in crisis, coming into a place that is warm and welcoming is really important, from the kids that we serve to the parents. We want to make sure that this place feels like home for the short time that they're here while they get back onto their feet."

This is Xcel's largest event to give back to communities, with more than 700 volunteers expected to help 25 different projects in Minnesota, North and South Dakota.
