MIDDAY INTERVIEW:National Hunger And Homelessness Awareness Week

Posted: Updated:

Deb Newman with Partners for Affordable Housing joined KEYC News 12 this Midday to talk about this week, National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.  This year’s campaign, Don’t Just Look Away, focuses on encouraging people to really take a look at what’s going on in your own community and how to reach out and help.

Over 9,000 bed-nights are being served between the Theresa House and Welcome Inn in a twelve month period. 41% of all shelter guests are children under the age 18. While shelter beds are full every night, roughly 480 households were turned away in 2015 from shelter due to lack of beds. Newman and the Partners board of directors are actively searching for property that would allow for a new shelter to serve more families in need.

This year, Minnesota’s annual Give to the Max Day falls during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week on Thursday, November 17. On this Give to the Max Day, donors are encouraged to support their favorite local non-profit, like Partners for Affordable Housing, by donating online at www.givemn.org. Every gift donated online on this day is eligible to receive an additional $1000 from GiveMN.org, the organization that supports Give to the Max Day.
