MANKATO, Minn. -

As part of National Hunger and Homeless Awareness week, area county and city officials are pitching in at the Salvation Army.

The Blue Earth County Homelessness Response Team is using the week to raise awareness of the issue in the area.

Nine officials with the cities of Mankato and North Mankato and Blue Earth and Nicollet counties helped serve lunch at the Salvation Army.

It's meant to help elected officials have a better idea of the issue of homelessness and poverty.

Blue Earth County Homelessness Response Team and Executive Director of Partners for Affordable Housing Deb Newman said, "Solving poverty is a pretty complex issue, so being able to have lawmakers here is really important as we look at affordable housing in our communities what are some ways that we can break down barriers or change laws. It's good to bring that awareness to those people as they go into meetings where they can really generate the change here in our communities."

The Homelessness Response Team also has a month–long fundraiser working to involve households.
