Neuroscience A Focus Of Gustavus President's $4 Million Donation

Posted: Updated:

We learned yesterday that Gustavus Adolphus College's president and her husband would be donating four million dollars to the college this year.

One of the focal points for the money will be an endowed professor in neuroscience, a subject dear to Rebecca and Thomas Bergman, and part of the college's plans for the future.
The four million dollar gift was divided into four parts, targeting specific areas. One of those areas, establishing a professor of neuroscience, is fitting seeing as how Rebecca Bergman's husband, Dr. Thomas Bergman, is head of the neurosurgery department at Hennepin County Medical Center. And the President herself was an executive at medical device giant Medtronic.

The seven-figure donation is intended to make a splash.
GAC's Ann Sponberg Peterson says, "President Bergman is leading by example. This is an inspirational president to begin with and we enjoy her leadership very much at Gustavus. Now to have this very significant gift from them is a blessing and inspiration for all of us - alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty."
Bergman wasn't available for an interview today because she's actually continuing the fundraising push, visiting alums on the East Coast in the hopes of generating more money for a big push for improvements to Gustavus.
Sponberg Peterson says, "We are ramping up to the next level - all our efforts are being guided by the Gustavus ACTS strategic plan. There will be a number of initiatives that will flow from the strategic plan that will give direction to all of our advancement efforts."
The Bergman's didn't attend Gustavus themselves, but are parents to both a graduate and a current student at the college.
