Memorial Service Celebrates Don Roberts Life

ST PETER, MN -

In July, the Gustavus hockey community lost one of its greatest after former hockey coach Don Roberts passed away.

On Saturday, generations of friends and family gathered in the Christ Chapel on campus to celebrate his life.

Roberts restarted the Gustavus hockey program in 1964, without ever taking to the ice before. Thirty-three years later, he retired as the winningest coach in the NCAA Division III history.

But Roberts is remembered for more than just the scores on the high boards.

"There's an arena on campus named after him, there's a sculpture at the entrance of him. But these are not the legacies of Don Roberts. His legacy is in the relationship that he had that was forged with the people that were fortunate enough to be touched by him," said Speaker Bernie Dusich.

The memorial service was held in conjunction with the 75th season of hockey celebration.
