ST. PETER, MINN. -

Gustavus Adolphus College is celebrating the 76th annual Festival of St. Lucia.

The Swedish tradition has been honoring sophomore women at Gustavus since 1941.

The festival recognized a sophomore woman for courageous leadership, service to others, compassion and strength of character.

This year honored Alicia Lhotka as St. Lucia.

Guild of St. Lucia member Laura Isdahl said, "This is something that has such a long tradition, it's one of the longest traditions at Gustavus and it really shows because the community recognizes this in an important event and again a time to pause and to sort of have that reflection in a time that's often really dark and cold."

Saint Lucia in the Christian faith is honored for her dedication to God.

In Sweden, she is a symbol of light with a legend saying Lucia appeared during a famine in the country.
